Spring Feeding

Spring is upon us and many people are tempted to quit feeding the birds and let "nature take care of them." Don't make this mistake. CardinalsFeeding birds in the spring is especially important. Actually, food supplies are at their lowest in the spring and when courtship and mating needs of the birds are at their highest. Add in drastic weather changes, spring snowstorms, late cold weather and long spring rains and birds face serious hardships.

Providing food in the spring will help birds survive the seasonal change and give them the added nourishment and energy required for the mating and nesting season. Plus, many migrating birds in spring appreciate the "fill-up," and you'll enjoy their brief stay.

Whatever you feed, don't stop now. You may miss the romance of a male cardinal presenting a seed to the female as a part of courtship, the patience of an adult carrying suet or seed to a mate, or bringing young birds by for a treat. Experts agree -- you are helping the birds and are in for the best backyard show in town!!
